Getting to Know Bailey and Elle Harris

The Freethought Society (FS) is pleased to host Bailey Harris and Elle Harris on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 3:00 PM (EST)/Noon (PST) for an online Zoom meeting entitled Getting to Know Bailey Harris and Elle Harris.

Please join the FS Meetup group to learn how you can obtain the Zoom link. Only Meetup members can obtain the Zoom meeting link.

Bailey Harris published her first book My Name is Stardust when she was only eight years old. Her second book is Stardust Explores The Solar System. The third book in Bailey’s Stardust book series is Stardust Explores Earth’s Wonders. All the books use simple, charming stories and have beautiful artwork to inspire curiosity about the world and universe. At the same time, these books teach the scientific method and demonstrate the importance of evidence-based reasoning, using accessible real-world examples.

Bailey’s nine-year-old younger sister Elle Harris has just written her first book, Elle the Humanist. This book is a warm introduction to humanism and ethics as only a lovely young lady can tell it.

Both Elle and Bailey will be live via Zoom on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 3PM (EST) to tell you how they came to be writers and what inspired them at such a young age to be advocates of Humanism and science. They will both read from their books so you may want to log in with your own children at your side.

There will be time for a question and answer period.

Don’t miss this opportunity to get to know Elle and Bailey. They are our hope for the future!

The Zoom waiting room will open for a Pre-Event Social at 2:45 PM (EST)/11:45 AM (PST). Music will be provided and there will be an opportunity to chat.

Bailey and Elle will be live at 3:00 PM (EST)/Noon (PST).

Dr. Daeschler to Present “Cold, Hard Science: The 2016-2017 Antarctic Paleontological Expedition”

Dr. Daeschler to Present

“Cold, Hard Science: The 2016-2017 Antarctic Paleontological Expedition”

PENNSYLVANIA — The Freethought Society is pleased to host Dr. Ted Daeschler as a speaker at the Ludington Library (5 South Bryn Mawr AvenueBryn Mawr) on WednesdayMay 23, 2018. This event is free and open-to-the-public. The meeting starts at 7:00 PM.

Dr. Daeschler’s presentation “Cold, Hard Science: The 2016-2017 Antarctic Paleontological Expedition,” will highlight the Devonian Period (420-360 million-years-ago). Fossils bear witnessed of profound diversification of the form and function of aquatic vertebrates, including the origin of limbed forms. Previous discoveries from fossil sites in the northern hemisphere motivated questions about biotic evolution within the southern landmasses from the same timeframe.

Working out of McMurdo Station, Dr. Daeschler’s team spent three weeks at two sites in the Transantarctic Mountains of Southern Victoria Land, Antarctica. These areas have had little paleontological exploration and this fieldwork revealed productive Middle Devonian sites with a wide variety of fossil vertebrates from ancient freshwater ecosystems. A powerful slide show will take you into the camp and the surrounding areas.

About Dr. Ted Daeschler:

Dr. Daeschler is curator of Vertebrate Zoology, Academy of Natural Sciences Professor, Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science, Drexel University. He has been at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia since 1987. His research interests center on Late Devonian-age fossils and the origin of limbed vertebrates. Daeschler’s responsibilities at the Academy of Natural Sciences focus on research, teaching, collections curation, and public programs within the museum. Since 2011, Dr. Daeschler has had a joint appointment as a Professor in the Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science at Drexel.

His March 22ndspeech is based on this book.

Halpern is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fulbright Scholarship, and an Athenaeum Literary Award. He is a regular contributor to NOVA’s The Nature of Reality physics blog.
